Film Response: Glory
The essential vision of this film was to recall the story of the 54th Massachusetts volunteer infantry and to show their struggles as ane of the nations first all-black infantries. The story is told in the perspective of their colonel Robert Gould Shaw. It explains their strugglesof all the men and their Colonel to be accepted as equals in the military.
The films opening stab starts out with a bang as a tree is light upon with canon clunk fire. It stretchs as it shows Colonel Shaw leading a separate of men into the Battle of Antietam. For a second he gazes up to the sky to see a beautiful sun that is short taken away by the smoke of cannon ball fire and muskets. The beginning persists in multiple nips of violent state of war including a head exploding right in the face of the Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. The scene ends with his troops losing heavy casualties and many retreating. You see many continue to fight as Robert Shaw lies on the ground wounded and loses consciousness.
In numerous scenes the person watching observes the Troops training and training new skills that will help them in battle. Many come along to learn slowly and many seem to not be taking it seriously at first. Upon observing and talking to sergeant Mulcahy the Colonel decides to start taking it harder on them by having intense drills and unmitigated rules.
This starts a shorts division for his friend Thomas who is one of the soldiers, but soon this appears to be a crucial footmark for them as the film progresses. The scene in which Thomas cannot bring about a task and Sergeant Mulcahy strikes him down is a really emotional scene in their developing process because it shows it in Colonel Shaws perspective as a friend and a leader with a higher power.
