Final Exam
Over the course of this semester we return diagnosed several themes that have reoccurred in our readings on the significant leaders that have been preserve in Ancient Greek and Roman pieces of literature. A hint theme that I have seemed to notice is that of leadership and how a ruler reacts to the events affecting him, his pile, and his city. I have come to project that a leader is an individual who is able to guide his people through times of struggle and to make difficult decisions that be in the best interest of the community. These are not incessantly the most desired outcomes; but, part of being a strong leader is having the strength to make decisions for the benefit of their people, to stand by their word, and to rule despite ridicule. We have read the works of quintuple influential Greek and Roman writers; however I leave alone specifically be focusing on the writings of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Plutarch to exposit a vision of leadership in Old Greek and Roman societies.
The first historian and piece of work we study in class was Aeschylus play Agamemnon, which depicted the story of the ending of King Agamemnon upon his return from a 10 year contend that was waged over a woman when the Trojan Prince Paris had stolen Helen from Agamemnons sidekick Menelaus. Agamemnon had to choose between the soldiers he commands and his own daughter, Iphigenia, when Calchas the Prophet advised the King that the goddess Artemis had demanded a sacrifice if the Greek fleet was to broom to Troy. Aeschylus explains this heavy dilemma of a father torn between his blood and his citys morale by means of the Chorus:
My chance is angry is I disobey these,
but angry if I slaughter / this child, the beauty of my house,
with maiden blood shed staining / these fathers hands besides the altar.
